Torsion Spring Replacement in The Junction

After pulling the red release cord, you tried lifting the door yourself and it would barely leave the floor. A door that used to glide up with one hand now takes real effort, which points to the counterbalance rather than the opener.

Torsion Spring Replacement

In plain words

A spring that breaks with the car inside puts the whole morning on hold, and this service is designed to get that door working again in a single visit. The technician arrives with a range of spring sizes, secures the door so it cannot move, identifies exactly which spring the door needs, and installs and winds the replacement. Once the door balances by hand, the opener is reconnected and tested. Until then the safe approach is simple: leave the door where it is, keep clear of it, and share a photo of the spring area so the right parts arrive on the truck.

Sound familiar?

The door drops the last stretch to the floor rather than settling, and when you stop it halfway by hand it slides down instead of staying put. Balance has drifted, and the spring is no longer holding its share of the weight.

How the visit goes

The Junction

How the visit goes

  1. Reading the spring itself

The first measurements come from the spring that is already on the shaft. The technician measures wire thickness across a run of ten or twenty coils, the inside diameter of the coil, the overall length of the spring when relaxed, and the wind direction, which is read from how the coils lean. On a two-spring door each spring is checked separately, because a left-wound and a right-wound spring sit on either side of the centre bracket. Any tag or colour marking is noted too. These numbers narrow down what the door was built with, and together with the door's weight they point to the correct replacement.

  2. Balancing the door by hand

Once the clamps are off, the technician lifts the door by hand to about waist height and lets go. A balanced door stays where it is, or drifts only slightly. If it rises on its own, the spring has a little too much tension and is eased a quarter turn; if it drops, a quarter turn is added. The door is then run through its full travel, watching that both sides move together and the sections stay flat in the tracks. This is repeated until the door feels light and stops cleanly at several heights, which is the standard the whole job is measured against.

  3. What cycle life means for you

The spring you chose is rated for a number of full open-close cycles, and that number translates into years according to your routine. A standard-cycle spring on a door used four times a day works out to several years of service; a household with teenagers and a home workshop will use cycles sooner, while a high-cycle spring stretches the same routine considerably further. Knowing your rating and your habits gives you a rough sense of when the next replacement falls due, so spring service becomes a planned item like furnace maintenance rather than a surprise on a cold morning.

What affects the quote

Same fees day, night or weekend

  1. 1Centre and end bearings

With the shaft out, bearings that grind, wobble or have seized are renewed. Smooth bearings reduce the load on the spring and opener, and their condition is confirmed by hand during the check.

  2. 2Door size and weight

A double-width door, a solid wood door or a thick insulated door weighs far more than a single-width steel panel, calling for heavier wire, longer coils or more springs to balance it.

  3. 3Opener reconnection and testing

Resetting force and travel limits and running the reversal and photo-eye tests are part of the visit. An opener with worn gears or a slipping trolley uncovered during testing becomes a separate item.

Torsion Spring Replacement: questions

Can a spring be adjusted rather than replaced?

A spring that is intact but has relaxed slightly can be given a little more tension, within limits, to restore balance; this is a normal adjustment on a door that has settled. A spring with a broken coil is replaced as a unit, since the wire has reached the end of its life. The technician checks the condition of the steel and recommends whichever restores a balanced, safe door.

What happens if the header wood or centre bracket is damaged?

The centre bracket anchors the spring's reaction force to the framing above the door, so it has to be solid. If the header has split or softened, or the lag bolts have pulled, the technician can refasten into sound wood, add a reinforcing plate or replace the bracket before the new spring is wound. Dealing with this first keeps the shaft level and the spring pulling straight, which protects the bearings and the door.

My car is inside the garage; how do you get the door open?

Once the technician is on site, the door is secured and the spring replaced with the door in its closed position, which is how spring work is always done. When the new spring is wound and the door balances, it lifts normally and the vehicle drives out. There is no need to force the door open beforehand; leaving it closed keeps the door square and the job straightforward.
